Sometimes starting over can be a very scary experience. You feel like you’ve come to a point in your life where you don’t have any options, All doors have been closed, you feel like a failure, and you’ve been forced out of your comfort zone and left with nothing. Have you ever felt like this? I’m sure at one point in our lives we have all felt this way. So how do we move forward and get started?
Like anything in life, working through our fears to get where we want to go is the key to being successful. If you don’t learn how to face them, it can rip away at your mind, body, and spirit. Use these tips to help you move forward to start that weight loss, fitness, and health journey.
Writing our thoughts down on paper can teach us a lot about ourselves. It allows us to set aside time without feeling judged and reflect on the issue at hand. Find a quiet spot away from distractions so you are able to concentrate without have disruptions. By doing this, you can get completely honest on how your fear was started and what is holding you back from moving forward. Once you face it head, the fear loses power over you.
I encourage many of my clients to journal regardless of the reason. If we have a negative mindset and are constantly putting ourselves down, we cannot move forward. This can stop people from losing weight and keeping off, not continuing with their fitness regime, or training for something specific. It doesn’t matter what the goals are, but if you don’t have the right tools to guide you, you will most likely fail. Journaling will allow you to accept failure as a part of life and let go of negative feelings.
We live in a faced paced world. From getting the children to their after school programs, to working multiple jobs, to spending time commuting, we never have time to relax the body and the mind. Learn to live in a relaxed state all day long by taking mini-breaks throughout the day. It could be anything from going for a short walk to picking up a magazine to read a few pages. The idea is to get your mind occupied doing something fun instead of focusing on the task at hand. This strategy allows you to get more creative or figure out an alternative way to get you through your task.
If your goal is to start a fitness program and you are scared to start because you have failed so many times, try taking a break to stop thinking about it. Over-thinking obstacles that you have failed at in the past will drive you crazy. Take a deep breath, forgive yourself for past mistakes, and move forward knowing that you are going to make a positive change this time around.
Change your story
Fear is just an illusion. We spend so much time focusing on our past and what happened to us that we don’t allow for new experiences to happen. Everyone has a past that we cannot change but you can change your story to create a new present and future. Start to live in the moment and focus on the story you want to create for yourself. If you don’t like your past story then change it. You have the power to do this with your thoughts.
Many people who have failed at losing weight or quitting a fitness program fall into the trap of living in the past. They tell themselves a story that they failed or didn’t meet their expectations of weight loss and they are doomed for the future to succeed. This type of mindset is typical as we base our future on our past results. Be open to create the world you want by focusing your attention on being successful. The key is to start thinking it and once you start to believe it, you set the universe in motion.
Why do we take life so seriously sometimes? Don’t be mad at yourself for not reaching your fitness goals, instead, take a different approach and laugh at your past mistakes. Forgive, forget, and move on. Once you take a step back at look at the big picture, you understand how silly it sounds. Laughing can be such a relaxing tool. If you have trouble getting started, then watch a funny movie or television show to escape your present thoughts. You will notice as you start laughing more, you start to smile more, and you start to think more positively.
Laughter is the best medicine!
Sometimes before I even start to train my clients, I sit down with them and talk about their past failures. This helps me to provide them with clarity on how to move forward in a positive way. We’ve all made mistakes, but the important thing is to learn from them and move forward.
Losing weight is a daily struggle for many people. It doesn’t always start with working out or changing your eating habits, but learning to change your thinking patterns. I can give anyone a meal plan or fitness program, but not everyone can stick with it. What is the difference between someone who has lost weight and kept it off? A positive mindset.
Learning to forgive ourselves is one of the hardest things to do. Knowing that we have failed and resisting to start over can be a very experience for some. To get past it, I help people get out of their comfort zones. This is where the magic happens. By taking small steps, your action builds courage, and eventually the fear dissipates.
